Rulings are not established by visions or dreams, and requests are not binding due to dreams. But if a child sees his father and he requests something which does not cause difficulty and he sees that this is from good treatment of him and carries out this request whilst it is not binding, there is no harm in him doing so, especially if it is clear that it is something good. But the default is that rulings are not established by dreams, and what has been established by dreams was due to the Prophet ﷺ approving them. As for anyone besides him, then the answer is no. The call to prayer was established in the hadeeth of ‘Abdu-llaah ibn Zayd when he saw a man in a dream saying, ‘Allaahu Akbar! Allaahu Akbar!…’ to the end of the call, as is reported by Abu Daawood 499. This was established by way of the Prophet’s approval and not simply because it was a dream. This is something agreed upon by scholars, but unfortunately some people who ascribe to knowledge claim that rulings can be established by way of dreams and visions. Rather, they go to lengths authenticating hadeeth and claiming others to be weak based on dreams, and that a person saw the Prophet ﷺ who informed him of that! All of this is not established in the legislation, and the Prophet ﷺ can never be impersonated by the devil in a dream, so this deviation can never be attributed to him ﷺ but rather it is from the person who claimed he saw it in a dream or vision. A sleeping person can never be accurate in relating his dream and there is an issue with being precise and accurate when a person is dreaming. Due to this fact, we find many people who have dreams and when they wake up, they are imprecise about theirs dreams, that is they are unable to relate their dreams accurately, due to that which escapes them in their sleep. Thus, nothing can be established on such dreams. Therefore, whoever authenticates or weakens anything already established in the legislation due to dreams, establishes a ruling or negates a ruling, he is incorrect and his statement is not to be given the slightest of attention, and this is what scholars agree upon.
