This is a topic which scholars have differed on. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah’s Mercy be upon him) explained it in his invaluable book Iddat ASs-Ssaabireen wa Dhakheerat ASh-Shaakireen. Both groups of scholars have their evidence. However, the strongest opinion according to Shaykh Al-Islaam (may Allaah’s Mercy be upon him) is that gratitude upon blessings is better than patience when afflicted with calamity. This is because gratitude is a voluntary expression while patience is on account of being forced into that situation. However, it is better not to pass judgment regarding which is better, because both parties have very strong arguments to prove their point. It is better to look at the situation of the person, because it is all related to fearing Allaah. Therefore, the one who has the most fear of Allaah is better, and Allaah knows best.
